A volunteer fire department in America has had over $25,000 of equipment stolen, including an expensive thermal imaging camera.

The theft took place last Thursday, and the thieves took off with fire radios, lights, the thermal imaging camera, a 42 inch television set and– bizarrely – a set of firefighter apparel and gear.

The thermal camera that was stolen retails for around $10,000 to $15,000, and would be a significant financial blow to the fire station if they weren’t insured. Thankfully, they are though, and have all the details about the thermal camera handy to make a claim.

Firefighters traditionally use thermal imaging equipment as an aid to detecting fires. Uses include tracking fire growth, locating victims and searching for potential exit routes. They can also see through smoke, making them invaluable for navigation in areas ravaged by fire.

"We'll still be able to provide service to the community," said Bob McCartney, chief of the station. "It may slow us down a bit."
